Gabriel Weinberg, 31, didn’t plan to go up against Google when he launched DuckDuckGo in 2008, but it’s become a search-engine darling for its privacy promises among the geek heads and a growing number of regular cyber-surfers.

“I had some ideas about search, but wasn’t setting out to do anything necessarily,” said Weinberg, who described DuckDuckGo’s beginnings as a “weekend project.”
